Any given day, swings depend more on luck factor than skill I think... However, with skill, you learn to lose less in bad luck days and win more in good luck days... In the long run, assuming luck evens out, Skill will be the net winner!!
To a non-poker player, it is a luck game as he can always find a point-in-time example, and demonstrate how he lost when he was 90%+ favourite. Poker player realizes this as normal variance, and continues to count on skill despite bad luck days!

Some books have been written on the Variance subject - I think Mason Malmuth has argued how bad luck swings can last over 6 months.. Pretty tough to hold on to the belief that it is a skill game if you are going thru one of those.. :-)
